Maynooth Ethnographic Summer School 2024

17-21 June, Maynooth University campus

The Summer School meets concurrently with the Creole Blended Intensive Programme

Guest mentor: Dr. Dale Pesmen (Chicago)

The Maynooth Ethnographic Summer School, 2024 will focus on ethnographic writing, and features a lecture and an intensive workshop conducted by Dale Pesmen (pesmen.com). It is intended for post-field PhD students, recent PhDs and early career scholars who would like new perspectives and tools for ethnographic writing.

Dale Pesmen is a visual artist and anthropologist whose book, Russia and Soul (Cornell University Press 2000), is based on her experiences during her residence as an anthropologist and interpreter in a formerly closed Siberian military-industrial city during the early 1990s.  Russia and Soul is an ethnographic classic which combines vivid literary descriptions of everyday Siberian Russian life during the early 1990s with quotes from the author's interviews with people living through that tremendously difficult time, with jokes, stories, and discussions of Russian culture, history, philosophy, and language.

Dr. Pesmen received her Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Chicago and has taught in the U.S. and Europe.

Participants in the Summer School can also attend a range of faculty lectures and social events which are part of the CREOLE BIP.
