Professor of Music at Maynooth University, Victor Lazzarini is a composer and performer of electronic and instrumental music. His work extends from contemporary jazz to computer and concert instrumental music. Lazzarini's music is regularly performed in Ireland and abroad, has been released by the Irish label Farpoint Recordings and is accessible on all streaming platforms.
For this lunchtime performance, Victor Lazzarini will perform a genre of improvised electronic music called Frippertronics. Originally created by Robert Fripp and Brian Eno in their recording No Pussyfooting of 1973 (following a method employed by various composers in the 1960s), the essence of the genre is the use of some form of a long delay line with feedback, to accumulate in layers the live performance gestures. In Lazzarini's setup, he will be using Csound to provide all the processing, which allows him to define as many delay lines with any useful length in any arrangement. This type of performance celebrates memory, new versus old, and, foremost, the concept of entropy - all things tend to decay after a while, and so do our musical gestures.
This programme is backed up by Victor Lazzarini's two album releases, Frippertronics (2023) and Frippertronics live at the Klangtheater mdw, Vienna (2024) - all of which are available on streaming platforms and Bandcamp releases. Lazzarini's scores are also available from the Contemporary Music Centre in Dublin.
