The MU Chamber Choir, under Artistic Director Michael T. Dawson, recently performed at the Irish Rugby Football Union's (IRFU) 150th-anniversary celebration, held at the RDS in Dublin. The landmark event brought together 1,600 guests, including some of Ireland’s famous rugby stars, to honour the history of Irish rugby.
The choir collaborated with Phil Coulter, one of Ireland's most revered musicians and songwriters. Known for his iconic work with The Dubliners and The Chieftains, Coulter wrote “Ireland’s Call,” the anthem which was created by the IRFU to allow all members of the Irish Rugby Team from all 32 counties of Ireland.
“It was such a pleasure to hear my song delivered so well by such a professional group”, said Phil Coulter.
Adding to the magic of the evening was eight-year-old singing sensation Stevie Mulrooney, who joined the choir to perform the Rugby National Anthem. Stevie, who first rose to fame with his heartwarming rendition of "Ireland’s Call" on the 2023 Late Late Toy Show, had previously performed at the Guinness Six Nations at the Aviva Stadium in February 2024.
The celebration at the RDS was a fitting tribute to the legacy of Irish rugby, featuring performances by Imelda May and others, heartfelt speeches from former rugby captains Brian O'Driscoll and Johnny Sexton, and exhibitions honouring the sport's profound impact over the past 150 years.
