My MU Experience
MH101 - 3rd Year Music and Nua-Ghaeilge
I'm Kira Duff and this is my second year working as a student ambassador. I am delighted to have the role again this year. Here is my story on my Maynooth journey so far...
I have always known that I wanted to teach, but was unsure on whether to go down the route of primary or secondary school teaching. That's when I was introduced to the Arts degree at Maynooth University. Music and Irish have always been my two best and favourite subjects, so it was ideal that I had the opportunity to study both at third level. I first realised my love for the campus when I attended the open days. I went to talks on the subjects that I wanted to study, and that is when I knew that Maynooth University was the university for me.
I remember coming in on my first day, as nervous as can be but excited for the journey that was in store for me. I remember getting a bit overwhelmed, unsure of where to go or who to talk to. I met an extremely kind student ambassador, and he brought me to where I needed to go and assured me that everything was going to be okay. His kindness inspired me to take on the role of Orientation Leader. I have been an Orientation Leader for the past two years, and helped people that were in the same position as me back in 2022.
Since beginning yy Maynooth journey I have matured, joined societies and made a lovely group of friends too. I have also been deeply involved in working alongside Admissions and different things around campus. I am extremely lucky and grateful with all of the opportunities given to me.
In final year, I am in college Monday-Friday for both semesters. This semester, between tutorials and my private singing lesson for music, I am in for fifteen hours a week, which is not bad at all. In between lectures, I like to either meet my friends to chill or grab lunch, study in the library or practice my songs for my music recital in the practice rooms. I also work for Admissions between lectures, giving campus tours to prospective students, etc.
I came to college straight after my Leaving Certificate, which was undoubtedly the best option for me. I knew exactly what I wanted to do, and got in with no problems. I am also a commuter, so I get the bus and train to college every day, and two buses home. I'm from Dublin, so I am pretty lucky with all of the public transport options available to me.
I am heavily involved with the Musical Society, or MUMS. I was in stage school from 2013 up until June of this year, but am still a member of MUMS. I am also involved with our Irish society, Cuallacht Cholmcille, and have been on committee for the past two years, helping organise different events, such as Bál na Gaeilge, etc.
Ádh mór, mo chairde!
