At an official launch event in the Phoenix Boardroom yesterday (Feb 24th), Dr Peter Robbins of EDEN, the University’s Centre for Entrepreneurship, Design & Innovation, declared the race officially on to find Maynooth University’s Student Entrepreneur of the Year.
One of the EDEN Advisory Board, Dr Michael Broughan from Enterprise Ireland described it like this. “With 10,000 students in Maynooth University, you have to believe that, at least, 3 or 4 of them are smart enough to be the next Collison brothers or the next Bill Gates – the job of this competition is to help us find them and get them to come forward with their ideas.’
We’re inviting students to come forward and enter our 2016 Student Entrepreneurship Challenge and come along to some of our fun events to help you shape your idea into a testable business concept and, hopefully, a more tangible innovation asset.
Also, speaking at the event, Gavyn Pedley last year’s winner described how his business has been doing since winning the competition. Moodley Manor makes and markets meat free sausages and bacon and they have just got a national listing to be stocked in every branch of SuperValu nationwide. His business is thriving and he gave an inspiring talk about the highs and lows of being an entrepreneur in a highly competitive market.
Alltech’s Aoife Casey, also spoke at the event and they too are funding a student enterprise competition.
If you have an idea that you think has potential and that you’ve been thinking about for a while but have yet to do anything about – this is the time to get involved with Eden. The competition Moodle page is here – please log on and enroll to hear of our events and get involved.
As, another Maynooth Professor, Martin Curley says, ‘If you don’t shoot, you’ll never score!”
Good luck!
