Sport and Nationalism in Asia - Power, Politics, and Identity

The workshop was held in Maynooth University on the 18th and 19th of April 2013. It was jointly organised by - Routledge, Chinese Studies at National University of Ireland, Maynooth and the School of Asian Studies at University College Cork. The theme of the workshop was Sport and Nationalism in Asia - Power, Politics, and Identity. Distinguished academics from Europe, North America and Asia gathered at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth making the workshop an international event. The workshop provided interdisciplinary study of the relationships between sport and nationalism in Asia. We were privileged to have the opening ceremony performed by the President of Maynooth University Professor Philip Nolan and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Celtic Studies & Philosophy Dr. Thomas O’Connor. Dr.Arnd Witte, Head of the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures performed the closing ceremony. Prof Nolan welcomed and thanked the representatives who had travelled from such a variety of countries to participate. Dr. Witte concluded that the conference had been a very successful international event and is important for the future growth of Chinese Studies.
