About the Speakers
Ms Marie-Claire Maney, Chairperson of the Tax Appeals Commission
Ms Marie-Claire Maney was appointed by the Minister for Finance as the inaugural Chairperson of the Tax Appeals Commission. Her duties under section 4F of the Finance (Tax Appeals and Prospectus Regulation) Act 2019 are to ensure the proper administration and management of the Tax Appeals Commission as the accounting officer. Ms Maney is also a Commissioner of the Tax Appeals Commission. Prior to taking up her appointment as Chairperson, Ms Maney was the Revenue Solicitor and the Assistant Secretary and Head of the Investigation and Prosecution Division for the Revenue Commissioners. Previously, she was the Head of Legal Affairs and Human Rights for An Garda Síochána and acting Head of Legal Services for the Police Service of Northern Ireland. She was the first civilian of the PSNI to pass the Strategic Command Course. Ms Maney has been a decision maker on asylum cases of the International Protection Appeals Tribunal, the first Chair of the Irish Football Association Appeals Committee and a member of legal committee of UEFA. She taught lax law as an adjunct professor of the University of Ireland, Maynooth. Before joining the public sector, she was a partner in a UK law firm. She is a graduate of Cambridge University, Trinity College Dublin and recently Kings Inns.
Claire Bruton, barrister specialising in employment law
Claire Bruton is a practising barrister specialising in employment law. She is a former editor of the Employment Law Reports and the Irish Employment Law Journal. She is a co-author of Employment Equality Law, a second edition which is currently being prepared.
Fiona Murphy, Senior Counsel
Fiona Murphy SC was called to the bar in 2000 and to the Inner Bar in 2018. She combines practising criminal law (both prosecution and defence), regulatory prosecutions, extradition, judicial review and civil law particularly the area of construction.
