Staff and students in the Department of Ancient Classics are involved in a wide range of activities, within Maynooth, the rest of Ireland, and beyond. Here you can find a small selection of past, present and future activities organised or promoted by the Department.
In this section of the website you will also find information about the student-run MU Classics Society, to the annual IIHSA Greek Trip for students, and to the long-running Hibernian Hellenists conference, which was hosted in Maynooth in the decades before its final meeting in 2013.
Beyond the university, we might note the following initiatives in particular:
- Housed in new, permanent premises at Agras, the Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies in Athens (IIHSA) is a collaboration of Maynooth University; NUI Galway; University College Cork; Trinity College Dublin; University College Dublin; it aims to establish a distinctive Irish voice in the study of Greece and its culture from earliest times to the present day. It supports the work of students and scholars from across the country.
- ClassicsNow is a platform for collaborative projects and a series of interdisciplinary public events in Dublin & online. Launched in 2020 and held annually, has quicky become a highlight in Dublin's cultural calendar.
- Crucial, too, are the Department's links to the Classics Association of Ireland - whose mission is to promote Classics across the breadth of the island. Founded in 1908, the CAI still runs a host of local events throughout the year and annual Summer School too. (Last held in Maynooth in August 2023.)
