    This Social Justice Week event, organised by students and staff of the Maynooth University Department of International Development, highlights the struggles of Afghan women and LGBTQ+ individuals through poetry, storytelling, and discussion.

    UN peacekeepers on a peacekeeping mission

    "The Increasing Robust Nature of UN Peace Operations And The New UN Framework For Mission Mandates: Do They Work, or Do They Need To Be Changed?"

    The MU Department of International Development welcomes Kevin McDonald to present his research: "The Increasing Robust Nature of UN Peace Operations And The New UN Framework For Mission Mandates: Do They Work, Or Do They Need To Be Changed?". His presentation will consist of an overview of the various and challenging missions he has experienced through his career and will be followed by a consideration of mission mandates. The seminar will allow time for a short Q&A session following Kevin's presentation.

    A Struggle for Rights and Freedoms: The Importance of Civil Society Space

    What happens when “the practical room for action and manoeuvre” of civil society actors is restricted due to increased political tensions and polarisation? Chris O’Connell, Governance & Civil Society Space Advisor for Trócaire will present his recent report on this issue, using examples from Trócaire’s partners. In partnership with Barry Cannon, Dept. of Sociology, and Niamh Rooney, Dept, of International Development.

    Trocáire film & discussion - Make It Your Business

    Join us for a screening of the Trócaire "Make It Your Business" documentary on Wednesday November 29th at 5.30pm in Education Seminar Room (ESR), Education House. The documentary focuses on this issue of corporate abuse of human rights and the environment around the globe, and includes interviews with experts and human rights activists.

    20 years of EU Civilian Peacebuilding Missions

    In the context of Irelands current debates on neutrality and international peace efforts, it is timely to explore what exactly is meant by EU peacebuilding efforts, and activities related to its Common Security and Defence Policy. On Friday 16th June, the Kennedy Institute, in collaboration with the MU Dept. of International Development, will conduct an online seminar exploring these issues.

    First Wednesday: Autumn 2022 Series - Episode 3

    This session is the final of three events of the First Wednesdays Autumn 2022 Series, ‘The Struggle for Democracy: Exploring Commonalities in Global Citizenship and Activism’ organised in partnership with Comhlámh and with support from Concern Worldwide. In the closing session of the series we will take a closer look at what links the struggles for democracy through global citizenship and activism highlighted through this #FirstWeds series.

This event, moderated by Dr Tom Campbell, explores "The Struggle for the Earth – The Global is Local" with Ramón Balcázar Morales, Lynda Sullivan and Bernadette Hopkins.

    Transformational approaches for working with fragile and conflict affected communities

    As part of this year’s Research week, Dr. Paul O’Keeffe and Dr. Kieran Doyle will host a 1 hour presentation and discussion of their experiences in transformational research with refugees in fragile contexts and the enabling impact of mediation, negotiation and dialogue facilitation in international peacebuilding interventions.

    First Wednesday: Autumn 2022 Series

    THE STRUGGLE FOR DEMOCRACY: Exploring Commonalities in Global Citizenship and Activism Join us in partnership with Comhlámh this Autumn for the new First Wednesdays series, a set of three interlinked conversations with those currently involved in real-world struggles in Ireland and beyond. We will take a closer look at commonalities ‘in struggle’ across campaigning and activism movements, and explore what it would mean to consider these struggles as part of a process of ‘acts of global citizenship’ and ‘democratising democracy’.
