The historic Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre provided a beautiful ambiance for the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for Conflict Intervention’s seminar on the 21st October 2016. The seminar explored ‘The Economics of Reconciliation’ and brought together practitioners, academics, economists and entrepreneurs from both north and south in dialogue about the role of the social economy in facilitating reconciliation on the island of Ireland. The panel of speakers represented the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, Peter Bunting; The International Centre for Local and Regional Development (ICLRD), Caroline Creamer; Clann Credo Community Finance, Paul O’Sullivan and Inaugural Southern Joint Secretary of the North South Ministerial Council, Tim O’Connor. The themes explored throughout the seminar included: economic interdependence; seizing the potential for reconciliation; the role of education and training; investments in social enterprise for the creation of shared spaces and the role of community leaders in Belfast in holding the peace and maintaining safe communities.
