Title: Business Intelligence & the Metaverse
‘On your marks, headset, go! Understanding the building blocks of metaverse realms’
Amidst significant hype around Web3 technology and generative AI, the Metaverse is being highlighted as the newest technology platform that offers numerous possibilities for firms, however most managers are unclear about what the Metaverse is and how to use it for business purposes. Presenting the culmination of research recently published in Business Horizons, Brendan Keegan (alongside thee illustrious co-authors) goes back to basics to understand the core functionalities of the Metaverse. Adopting the theoretical lens of the classic social media honeycomb model, this seminar explains how the Metaverse can afford rich immersive experiences for users and organizations entering this space. The research establishes the notion of open and closed Metaverse ‘realms’, which possess different functionalities and affordances, in contrast to monolithic social media platforms such as LinkedIn and Meta. Lastly, the metaverse honeycomb model is applied to two specific realms (Roblox and Decentraland) to identify their respective strengths and weaknesses, enabling decisions as to which one is most suitable for specific strategic organisational goals.

Title: Academic – Practitioner Collaborative Research Projects: Reflections and Suggestions The discipline of Information Systems (IS) has been considered to have certain failings in its effort to impact on practice. There have been numerous research studies identifying failures in IS in its attempts to achieve desired outcomes and disappointments in assessments of return on investment. The analyses in these studies often yield recommendations that operate at a high level of abstraction and lack the detail and specificity to lead to action-oriented solutions. Such findings, while offered in a constructive spirit of helpfulness and concern for continuous improvement, do little to advance either (i) the capability of practitioners to achieve their goals or (ii) the theoretical knowledge underpinning Information System academic research. In this presentations I will present some reflections from my experience with academicpractitioner collaborative research projects and provide some suggestions for future work in the area.

Date & Time: Thursday 9th May 2024 1-2pm
Presenter: Dr Thomas Flavin, Associate Professor in Finance, Maynooth University School of Business https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/people/thomas-flavin
Title: "Hedging Commodity Price Risk with Green Bonds". Agricultural commodity price risk is a significant threat for many economies, especially those in the developing world. Climate shocks and other natural disasters influence the prices of these commodities, but these factors are largely outside the control of producers, leaving them vulnerable to such phenomena. The emergence of green bonds, whose proceeds are ringfenced to fund projects that are deemed to be environmentally friendly, to promote sustainable business practices or to be socially responsible, offers a financial instrument with the potential to diversify the risk faced by these producers. We examine the relationships between a range of agricultural products and a green bond index across different market conditions to assess, (1) the hedging effectiveness of the green bond; and (2) the stability of linkages during commodity price collapses.
