Dr Lynsey Black, lecturer in Maynooth University Department of Law, has been awarded a New Foundations Award from the Irish Research Council. Her project, 'Living Borders: Cattle Smuggling on the Ireland/Northern Ireland Border', introduces a novel perspective and historical element to consider the lived experience of borders - the everyday criminality of those who happen to live at national boundaries. The project links the recent past to present societal concerns by focusing on the practice of cattle smuggling on the Ireland/Northern Ireland border through the 20th century. Using oral history interviews and archival research, the project will illuminate personal histories, government policy and media framing relating to this practice. The project is a collaborative partnership with the National Museum of Ireland, including the creation of an archive and contribution to a standalone exhibition in 2024.
