Biography

Dr. Graham Kells is a theoretical physicist with interests in quantum technology, condensed matter,  complexity, and machine learning.   A native of Durrow Co. Laois, he completed a BSc in Applied Physics from DCU and and a PhD in Theoretical Physics at NUIM, before postdoctoral positions at MU, FU Berlin,  and then an Advanced  Fellowship in the Dublin Insitute for Advanced Studies (DIAS).  He held an Assistant professorship role in DCU before moving back to Maynooth in 2022.

Research Interests

I am interested in complex quantum phenomena and much of my research to date has centred on topological band structures and their potential usefulness for quantum information processing. In this context, I have focused primarily on superconducting nano-wires, which have been proposed as a way to trap and manipulate Majorana bound-states. Other related research topics include the role played by quantum resonances in driven chaotic systems and the relationship between quantum error correction and topological spin models. More recently I’ve been working on so-called weak zero-modes and the possibility that they can be enhanced to robustly store quantum information at high temperatures.  I’ve also become interested in the formalism of third-quantisation and in measurement-induced entanglement transitions.
