Please join us for a symposium and exhibition to explore the significance and legacy of the Second Reformation of the 1820s-40s. This symposium and exhibition launch fall on the bicentenary of the infamous sermon (charge) given by the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin, William Magee (1766-1831) in St Patrick’s Cathedral on 24 October 1822. Archbishop Magee’s charge sparked religious controversy in Ireland, playing a significant role in driving the Second Reformation, including the 'Bible War', and being countered by the emergence of an assertive Irish Catholicism. This symposium and the exhibition in the Russell Library aim to highlight this pivotal time in Irish history.
The symposium will take place in the John Paul II Library followed by the exhibition opening in the Russell Library.
The exhibition, co-curated by Dr Ciarán McCabe of Queen’s University Belfast and Alexandra Caccamo with the assistance of Maynooth University Special Collections and Archives staff, will run from 24 October 2022 to 27 January 2023, and will include material from the historical collections of St Patrick’s College, Maynooth and Maynooth University Library.
This is a free, in-person event.
Please note that the Russell Library is not wheelchair accessible.
