We are delighted to announce 19 SPUR projects with the Faculty of Science and Engineering this summer – the highest number of projects across all Faculties this year. Ten of these 19 projects have been funded by the Faculty of Science and Engineering Dean’s Office, giving more opportunities for students to get involved in exciting projects and benefit from this very rewarding programme.
The Summer Programme for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) is an active research based, paid experiential learning programme for successful undergraduate students who want to learn more about the postgraduate experience and possibly pursue a career in research. The projects take place over the summer; fulltime for 6 weeks or parttime for 12 weeks.
SPUR gives students the opportunity to work closely with Faculty Mentors on research projects across a range of disciplines, offering an academically enriching environment and exposure to a myriad of learning and research opportunities, thereby enhancing students’ confidence and discipline knowledge. As well as having a Faculty Mentor, students will also have access to a SPUR Mentor during the experience. SPUR Mentors are current PhD students at Maynooth University, who are available as an additional resource to students during their project, to meet virtually or for a coffee, to offer support and give advice from a peer perspective.
There are many benefits to undertaking a SPUR project. As well as the networking and professional development skills they will gain, students will also be awarded a €1,500 scholarship, will be eligible for a Gold Maynooth University Student Experience (MUSE) Award, and have their SPUR project recognised on their transcript – a great way to enhance employability and stand out from their peers!
