The Maynooth University School of Law and Criminology in collaboration with the Maynooth University School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures will welcome the first cohort of students into a new level 8 degree programme - the MH503 BCL (Law and Languages) beginning in September 2024.
The BCL (Law and Languages) is a four-year degree in Law combined with French, German, Irish or Spanish, opening up a range of employment prospects within and beyond Ireland. Students undertake all of the required modules needed for Law and a full suite of modules in their chosen European language. There are additional opportunities to continue the study of other modern languages in first year and/or take up a new language as a beginner in second year. Students receive an excellent grounding in core law subjects, while also developing their linguistic competence and intercultural awareness.
Graduates interested in a law career will be in a position to take exams for entrance to the Honorable Society of King's Inns in order to begin training as a barrister and are eligible to progress to take the Law Society of Ireland’s FE1 examinations to begin training as a solicitor. The approval applies to degrees conferred from 2028 onwards (the first graduating cohort of the degree.)
King's Inns approval means that graduates of the BCL will be eligible to take the Barrister-at-Law entrance examinations without first having to pass the King's Inns' Diploma in Legal Studies.
There is an important caveat to which we regularly direct students' attention: to avail of approved law degree status, students must, in addition to passing the degree and all required modules, pass two options - LW295 Administrative Law and LW354 Jurisprudence I - as part of their degree.
