Job Title: Placement Tutor

Job Description: The Department of Education at Maynooth University is currently seeking applications from experienced guidance counsellors to work as placement tutors on the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Guidance and Counselling. A placement tutor is a person primarily engaged by the Department of Education to support and mentor trainee guidance counsellors and to evaluate their practice while on school placement.
Applications from candidates with expertise in this area are welcomed. The role is suitable for recently retired Guidance Counsellors (no longer than 3 years), for Guidance Counsellors with job-sharing arrangements or part-time hours.
 
Requirements:
Specifically, the ideal candidate will have:
 

  • Worked, or be working, in a school or educational setting within the last 3 years with adolescents and be registered with the Teaching Council and the Institute of Guidance Counsellors.
  • Well-developed skills in relation to supporting, mentoring and evaluating trainee guidance counsellors’ professional practice.
  • The means to travel to schools in a given geographical area and the capacity to support the Department of Education to build partnership with placement schools.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work alone and as part of a team, excellent organisational and ICT skills.

 
Desireable: Extensive experience of Counselling Supervision; have counselling supervisor skills including assessing trainees’ counselling skills, professional role and ethical behaviours, case conceptualising skills and supporting trainees’ emotional awareness and self-reflection capacities. 

 
Key Responsibilities:
Placement tutors will be recruited on a part-time basis, based on demand, for up to one school year at a time. This is not a permanent role and regional considerations will apply. Tutors will be required to attend Induction and CPD meetings in Maynooth, visit trainee guidance counsellors on placement, facilitate small group tutorials, give oral and written feedback and follow Departmental assessment criteria.
A programme of professional development will be provided to prepare successful candidates for their role as a placement tutor. This involves both an induction programme and regular CPD meetings to support tutors in their role.

Salary Scale: Placement tutors are remunerated using the Maynooth University occasional rates of pay for tutorial work. In addition, travel allowances are paid in line with university rates.

Hours of Work: School Placement assessment visits will occur from September 2024 to June 2025.
