Luca Gorman is a Biological and Biomedical Sciences student at Maynooth University and Dunshaughlin Community College graduate.
"I found it difficult to decide what course I wanted to study and where I should go to college, however after the Maynooth open day I knew Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Maynooth University was the right pick for me.
I was surprised that when I got my CAO offer to Maynooth, I was also told that I would be a recipient of an Entrance Scholarship award. (The €1,000 Entrance Scholarship is automatically awarded to incoming first year students, via the CAO, who have obtained 575 points or more in the Leaving Certificate).
As part of my course, I get to study a wide variety of topics, however, my favourite modules to date have been immunology and cellular biotechnology. I enjoy learning about human health and diseases, and what kind of research is being developed to target these issues globally.
The biomedical science course has a dual focus on both laboratory practical sessions, but also scientific writing and reviewing research papers.
What stuck out to me the most about Maynooth at the open day was all of the support available. I have availed of the Maths Support Centre and the Chemistry drop-in sessions many times to aid with my coursework, which I found particularly helpful as I never studied chemistry before coming to Maynooth.
I have been a student ambassador for the year at Maynooth University where I work at different college events such as the open days. I am a representative for the Biological and Biomedical Sciences course where I answer questions to prospective students on the MU and the Ask a Student platform on Unibuddy. I have also received a platinum level MUSE award in Maynooth for completing over 150 hours of additional non-credit-bearing activities.
My favourite quality of Maynooth University is definitely how friendly the campus is. Everyone is always willing to lend and hand if you ever need it. There are also many opportunities to get involved and make new friends through the Clubs and societies. I’m currently part of the Music Society where I perform as part of the pop and rock music band. There are many different clubs which would suit everyone's interests."
