MIEC Student Ambassador Programme 2024/2025 with Prof. Gerry Lacey, MU Head of Electronic Engineering
Monday, December 9, 2024 - 13:30

We were delighted to welcome six Student Ambassadors from the Maynooth International Engineering College (MIEC) in Fuzhou for their inaugural visit to the Maynooth University (MU) campus. As a joint Sino-Irish college established in partnership with Fuzhou University, MIEC plays a crucial role in fostering international collaboration and cultural exchange. This visit exemplifies MU’s commitment to being a global hub for academic and cultural engagement, as outlined in the university’s strategic internationalisation goals.

A Memorable Academic and Cultural Experience

  • Academic Engagement:

The students met with researchers from the Centre for Ocean Energy Research (COER) and faculty members from the Departments of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. They toured cutting-edge robotics labs, explored engineering projects, and gained valuable insights into Ireland’s technological innovation landscape, while learning about MU’s postgraduate study options.

  • Cultural Exploration:

The students explored iconic Irish heritage sites, including Dublin’s historical landmarks and Kilkenny’s St. Canice’s Cathedral and Kilkenny Castle. These visits provided a deeper understanding of Ireland’s rich cultural legacy, with special thanks to the Department of Irish Cultural Heritage for their involvement in the programme.

  • Campus Integration:

The MIEC students enjoyed an immersive campus experience, including a guided tour of MU’s state-of-the-art facilities, a visit to the Science Museum of Ireland, and tours of the historic St. Joseph’s Chapel and the iconic Russell Library. They explored the anechoic chamber, gaining insight into advanced acoustic technology and sound research. The students also connected with MU Student Ambassadors and students from the Chinese Studies Department, fostering meaningful cross-cultural friendships and sharing personal academic experiences.

Strengthening Global Ties

This visit highlights Ireland’s role as a leader in innovative education while strengthening MU’s global partnerships. As noted in the MU Strategic Plan, “Building connections globally enhances the student experience and enriches academic collaboration.” The personal and professional development opportunities gained during the visit will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on all participants.

The students—Zhen Chen, Jiacheng Du, Lianggang Pan, Yue Zhou, Ri Huang, and Zhongheng Sun—were accompanied by MIEC Electronic Engineering Lecturer Dr. Wong Chin Hong. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and engagement made the programme a resounding success.

We look forward to many more collaborative ventures as this exciting milestone marks the continuation of a vibrant, long-lasting partnership between Maynooth University and Fuzhou University.
