Aoife's Experience

When I look back on the last three years at Maynooth University it is amazing to think about how much I have learned and achieved. It can be difficult to choose what to do when in secondary school, which is why I am so grateful for Maynooth’s extensive Arts course. Allowing me to test the waters first is what encouraged me to give Law and Criminology my all.

I still remember how it felt to begin in Maynooth University. Excitement mixed with nervousness, which was soon calmed by the encouraging orientation and support from lecturers and tutors. Group projects such as mock trials facilitate making friends, clubs and societies also allowed me to get involved in my other interests and make more connections.

I am so grateful for the opportunities I have had over the last three years. Going on an accredited work placement has been the highlight of my course. Getting to experience the workings of the courtroom and witness barristers and solicitors in action was a privilege.

An average week for me in University involves attending my lectures each day, engaging in my tutorials to get exam ready! It is not all hard work though, my week is also filled with daily lunches with my friends in one of Maynooth's many socialising areas. We also rent out the pods on campus to have study groups together and catch up on readings. No week in university is complete without a peaceful library study session and walking around the scenic campus grounds.

My time in final year is going by so fast, I am enjoying my new challenge as a student ambassador, refining my communication and leadership skills before I enter the working world! It is a privilege to help prospective students as I was helped, by giving insight into Law and Criminology and the social side of university. Career wise, Maynooth University has set me up for success as I now know I aim to be involved in the courtroom whether that be a barrister or alongside the Courts Service as a registrar. Wherever I end up working, I have my time at university to thank for the skills and qualities I have developed to get me there.
