Maynooth University’s School of Law and Criminology has signed a partnership agreement with the Irish Women Lawyers Association (IWLA), strengthening opportunities for female students in law and criminology. The signing ceremony took place on March 25, 2025, with key representatives from both institutions in attendance.
As part of this collaboration, the IWLA has introduced the prestigious IWLA Scholarship, aimed at supporting and empowering women in law and criminology. Open to Year 2 undergraduate students registered with the MU Access Programme, the scholarship provides financial assistance, hands-on legal experience, and invaluable mentorship opportunities. We are pleased to announce that the placement provider for the scholarship this Summer will be the Innocence Project.
Rosemarie Hayden, Pro Bono & Volunteer Coordinator at the Irish Red Cross and Chair of the IWLA, signed on behalf of IWLA. Representing Maynooth University (MU), Professor Fergus Ryan, Head of the School of Law and Criminology, and Rebecca Doolin, Vice President External Affairs, also participated in the signing. The event was attended by members of the International Justice Research Centre and female faculty members, reflecting MU’s commitment to gender equality and diversity in the legal field.
Professor Fergus Ryan expressed his appreciation: “The School of Law and Criminology is very thankful to the IWLA for partnering with us on this initiative, and we look forward to developing the partnership further over time.”
Rosemarie Hayden added: "The IWLA is delighted to sponsor this scholarship because we are committed to equality and diversity. We recognise the value of levelling the playing field for entry into the legal profession. We thank our colleagues in Maynooth for working with us to establish this scholarship, which will nurture lawyers of the future."
Additionally, the IWLA offers free membership to all students and encourages all eligible students to apply for the scholarship and join the association. Membership provides networking opportunities, professional connections, and career development resources.
This partnership reinforces Maynooth University’s dedication to inclusivity and excellence in legal education, ensuring that promising female students have the resources and opportunities needed to succeed in law and criminology.
