Remembering Our Colleague & Friend, Keith Hammond

Keith Hammond Tribute
Friday, April 25, 2025 - 11:30

We would like to pay tribute to Keith Hammond a cherished colleague and friend, who died recently.

We first met Keith when he invited the Department of Adult and Community Education at Maynooth University, Ireland to become a partner in an EU research project- Lifelong Learning in Palestine. Keith's deep understanding of the state of affairs in Gaza and the West Bank was invaluable as we embarked upon the project and as he educated us about the lived experience of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. Keith had an intimate understanding of the geopolitical context, and of
the social and cultural milieu of the Palestinian people; this he shared freely and generously with colleagues. His commitment to revealing the repression, cruelty and
intimidation experienced in the every day life of Palestinians was quite legendary. We worked with him for some six years and had the pleasure of maintaining contact with him for many more. It was a pleasure to know him and to engage with him in research. He was a fine academic carrying his insights and stories into each research project. A committed adult educator he brought theory to life through practice.

Keith loved people and enriched his relationships with a sense of fun and a wicked sense of humour. He was a gift to humanity. We are so sorry he is gone and wish him rest. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam
