    Biography

    Carmel Breslin completed her degree in Chemistry and PhD in Physical Chemistry at NUI Galway and then joined the Department of Chemistry at Maynooth University. She also spent a year working at the centre for Advanced Materials at Penn State University and at the Department of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering at the University of Southern California. Her research interests are in Electrochemistry and Materials and she is on the Editorial Boards of three peer-reviewed journals, Materials, Corrosion and Materials Degradation and Organic Polymer Material Research (OPMR) and is an elected member of the International Council on Materials Education and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Functional Materials and Chemical Engineering.

    Research Interests

    Electrochemistry and Materials
    Our research interests are focused on Electrochemistry and Materials. We work with various metals and alloys, conducting polymers, hydrogels, biopolymers, nanoparticles, nanowires, two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, layered double hydroxides, transition metal dichalcogenides, such as doped di-selinides, and supramolecular systems.  We are particularly interested in forming new materials and are especially interested in exploring their applications. Materials are designed and employed as sensors for biomedical and environmental applications, as adsorbent materials for the removal of pollutants from aquatic systems, as multifunctional electro-catalysts for applications in energy and energy conversion, and coatings for the corrosion protection of metals and alloys.

    For example, we have developed electrochemical sensors for the detection and analysis of biological molecules and drugs, Cr(VI), nitrates and other organic contaminants, such as pesticides, antibiotics and pharmaceuticals. New multifunctional materials are designed and used in electrocoagulation and electro-Fenton to remove a variety of contaminants from water, while polymeric membranes, such as chitosan modified with carbon-based materials, are utilised to remove organic and metal ion contaminants from water. 

    Our research work is currently funded by     Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), Irish Research Council (IRC) and Industry, while past research projects have been funded and supported by SFI, IRC, Health Research Board (HRB), Enterprise Ireland (EI), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), the European Union and Industry. More details on the topics of our research are available under Publications and the titles of some of the PhD theses from the group are listed under Teaching.

    • Enrico Andreoli obtained a FAS-Science Challenge Award to fund a 6-month research placement at the University of Texas, USA to fund a collaborative project with Professor Seamus Curran, Department of Physics.
