Are you a recent student digesting your results and considering next steps, or are you out of education for a while and  looking to upskill or make a  career move?

The Department of Sociology offers two taught full time MAs that you may wish to consider.

Both options share methodology modules but differ in their theoretical options.

1) MA Sociology: Societies in Transition [MHY54] - Contact: Dr Paul Ryan (paul.ryan@mu.ie)

This MA degree explores the major changes in peoples' lives in contemporary society - in their personal lives, family relationships, and in the unequal chances in society and the relationship of that society to nature.

For more information see this 2 page leaflet  MAST flier 2022

2) MA Sociology: Digital Societies [MHY40] - Contact: Professor Aphra Kerr (aphra.kerr@mu.ie)

This MA explores how digital technologies are influencing contemporary society - in terms of work, leisure, identity, social relationships and democracy. What new digital inequalities are emerging? What can we do about them?

For more information see this 2 page leaflet. MADS flier 2022

What is a taught MA?

MAs are of one year duration and include a research thesis which is submitted during the summer.

Students take six modules and write a dissertation of approx.20,000 words under the guidance of a designated supervisor.

The 90 credits for the MA are made up of 60 credits awarded for taught modules and 30 credits for the dissertation. Some modules are compulsory but there are a good choice of optional modules also.

Each MA is also available as a postgraduate diploma, with the same course structure but no thesis. We recommend you take the MA if you can!
