    Options with your degree

What are the best subjects for getting a job

It really depends on what you're interested in, choose subjects you like and are good at as you are more likely to do well in these. A good standard of degree is important to employers.

What can I do with my subjects?

Did you know that up to 40% of graduate employment opportunities are for graduate of any discipline? This means that you can look for employment opportunities in a wide range of areas regardless of the subjects you studied. A useful question to ask might be "what would I like to do?"
If you don't know what you'd like to do visit Discover your Career and follow the Steps until things become clearer for you.  As you move through Step 1 you will be able to identify areas of interest to you and careers specifically related to your subject.

    Subject Choice

    Which subjects should I choose?

Do you have a particular career in mind?

    • If you don't have a particular career in mind at the moment choose subjects you like and are good at - you are more likely to do well in these.
    • If you do have as much as possible about this career, this will help you discover if specific subjects are needed. If particular subjects are needed for the careers you have in mind then this will influence your subject choice but it is still important to pick subjects that you like and are good at.

When considering which subjects to choose it is advisable to investigate what is involved in each subject.
Talk to the year co-ordinator in each department - they will be happy to advise you on what each subject/module involves.
When starting First Year it is also useful to try out several subjects before making a final choice.  Attend the lectures for 3-5 subjects initially so that you can get a sense of what the subject involves and whether it is what you expect it to be.
Don't be afraid to change your mind, it is common for students to come to university with certain subjects in their mind and it can be confusing when these subjects don't turn out the be what you expected. An open mind to subject choice will allow you to explore a number of options more freely.
If you are confused about subject choice call to the Careers Service Help-Desk (inside the main door of the Arts Building), where a careers adviser is available daily.

    Interviews

I've been called for interview, what should I do?

When you have been called or expect to be called for an interview it is important to start your preparation

    • Speak to a careers adviser at the Careers Service Helpdesk - no appointment necessary.
    • Use the Interview section of our website
    • Attend Careers Service Information Session - Interview Techniques

I have a lot of varied experience, how do I display this in a CV?

If you have changed career or have working in a number of varying roles in the past it can be a challenge to include all this information in  your CV. It is important to include valuable skills and experience, even if these skills and experience were gained in a different work sector. It is also important to display the information in a clear and concise manner so that an employer knows what you are offering.
