Conceptualizing ‘Calling’ in Lifelong Guidance

Have you heard people talk about themselves or others as having 'found their calling' and wondered what that means and how it relates to our work in lifelong guidance?

'Calling' as a concept has a rich tradition particularly in societies with significant Judeo-Christian influences.  This talk will take us from the theological concepts over millennia to the recent focus on 'work as calling' within the career development literature.
We will look at definitions, problems and implications for practice.  We will consider how calling might be best seen as less of a treasure we find once and for all and more of a lifelong process of sensemaking and adapting to complex circumstances.  If so, what are the tools for crafting our actions in light of this process that we can use in our practice?  And because we are reflective practitioners, we will also have some time to think about our own sense of calling, how this has served or not served us in our careers and what we might be called to now and in the future.

Dr. Gill Frigerio is Associate Professor in the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Warwick, where she leads the subject area offering career development and coaching programmes.  This includes leading a module called 'Career, Vocation and Calling'.  In 2023 she completed a Doctoral thesis about incorporating calling into practice. She is also external examiner on Maynooth's adult guidance and counselling programmes.
