    Voting in Seanad Éireann Elections

As a *graduate of Maynooth University, you have the right, provided that you are also an Irish citizen, to vote in the election of members of Ireland’s Upper House, Seanad Éireann. NUI graduates elect three members of Seanad Éireann (as also do the graduates of TCD, the University of Dublin). The legal and other mechanisms to extend this right to graduates of other Irish universities and colleges have not yet been put in place.

The NUI Seanad Éireann Register is a list of the names, addresses and qualifications of NUI graduates who are eligible to vote for the three members of the NUI constituency returned to Seanad Éireann. The Register is administered by NUI.

To vote, you must be included in the NUI Register of Electors.  If you are not already on the register but would like to be, there is an opportunity until 26 February each year, to lodge your claim for inclusion in the register which comes into operation on 1 June. For NUI graduates living abroad, because the ballot is a postal one, the Seanad Éireann election gives you a unique opportunity to cast your vote in an Irish parliamentary election.

Click here for more information on the above.

*You must hold a degree from the NUI.  Under the legislation a degree means a qualification with that title - whether at Bachelor’s (ordinary or honours ), Master's or doctoral level.

How do you know if you're on the Seanad Éireann Electoral Register?
Copies of the Register are available in the University library and the libraries of the institutions within the NUI and the National Library. The register is also available for examination in the NUI reception at 49 Merrion Square, Dublin 2.  Alternatively, graduates can check the register by contacting the NUI at elections@nui.ie or by telephone on +353 1 4392424.

    Changed your address?
Graduates should notify the Registration Officer at the NUI of any changes of address in writing, by post or by email and the following information should be supplied:

    Full name at registration
Any other form of name used (e.g. Irish, single, married, etc.)
    Date of birth
NUI degree(s) and other NUI qualification(s)
Year(s) of conferring(s) and NUI institution(s) where conferred
    Previous address
    Current address
    Telephone number
    Email address

Vóta a chaitheamh i dToghcháin Sheanad Éireann

    A Chéimí OÉ, a chara,

Tá Ollscoil na hÉireann i bhfeighil an Chláir.
I gcomhréir le forálacha na nAchtanna thuasluaite, cuirfear an leasú bliantúil a dhéanfar ‘i gcrích roimh an gcéad lá de Mheitheamh, agus tiocfaidh sé i bhfeidhm an lá sin agus déanfar é sa tslí agus go mbeidh clár na dtoghthóirí ina chlár cruinn, chomh fada agus is féidir…’

Tá ionadaíocht Ollscoile mar chuid dár gcóras daonlathach ó bunaíodh an Stát. Bhí tionchar suntasach ag seanadóirí a bhí tofa ag céimithe OÉ ar Sheanad Éireann ó bunaíodh é sa bhliain 1938 agus tá luach ar leith ag baint lena gcomhiarrachtaí ar mhaithe le saol agus le sochaí na hÉireann.Ba mhaith liom spreagadh a thabhairt duit mar chéimí de chuid Ollscoil na hÉireann páirt a ghlacadh inár gcóras daonlathach trí vóta a chaitheamh i dtoghcháin Sheanad Éireann.

    Éilimh ar Chlárúchán
Is féidir le céimí nach bhfuil ar chlár na dtoghthóirí cheana féin agus atá i dteideal a bheith air (i.e ní mór duit céim OÉ a bheith agat agus ní mór duit a bheith i do shaoránach Éireannach) éileamh a dhéanamh ar chlárúchán san fhoirm atá leagtha síos – atá ar fáil ó Oifig OÉ nó ar http://www.nui.ie/news/2020/SERegister_Registration.asp - ar nó roimh an 26 Feabhra.

    Athrú Seolta
Le cinntiú go bhfuil an clár ‘ina chlár cruinn, chomh fada agus is féidir’, tá sé tábhachtach go gcuireann toghthóirí cláraithe an tOifigeach Clárúcháin ar an eolas má thagann athrú ar a seoladh. Ba cheart a thabhairt faoi deara ‘gur féidir le haon duine atá cláraithe ar chlár na dtoghthóirí do thoghcheantar ollscoile, tráth ar bith, aon athrú ar sheoladh an duine sin a chur in iúl don oifigeach clárúcháin…’
Ba cheart athruithe seolta a chur in iúl i scríbhinn, sa phost nó trí ríomhphost a sheoladh. Iarrtar ar chéimithe an t-eolas seo a leanas a chur ar fáil:

    • Ainm iomlán nuair a chláraigh siad
    • Aon leagan eile den ainm a bhí in úsáid (m.sh. ainm i nGaeilge, singil, pósta, srl.)
    • Dáta breithe
    • Céim(eanna) agus cáilíocht(aí) OÉ
    • Bliain an Bhronnta/Blianta na mBronntaí agus Institiúidí OÉ an Bhronnta/na mBronntaí
    • Seoladh roimhe seo
    • Seoladh reatha
    • Uimhir Fóin, Seoladh ríomhphoist - de réir mar is cuíCéimithe nach maireann

Ba mhór ag an Oifigeach Clárúcháin ainmneacha agus seoltaí na ndaoine nach maireann atá liostaithe ar chlár na dtoghthóirí faoi láthair a fháil ionas go mbeadh an t-oifigeach in ann na hainmneacha sin a bhaint den chlár. Ba cheart an t-eolas sin a chur ar fáil i scríbhinn, sa phost nó i ríomhphost.
    Fiosrúcháin

Ba cheart fiosrúcháin a bhaineann le Clár na dToghthóirí, Foirmeacha Éilimh ar Chlárúcháin agus Foirmeacha um Athrú Seolta a chur chuig an Oifigeach Clárúcháin.
Sínithe: An Dr Attracta Halpin, BA MSc MBA LLD,
    Oifigeach Clárúcháin,
    Ollscoil na hÉireann,
    Cearnóg Mhuirfean,
    Baile Átha Cliath 2.
