This is a one year full-time programme that provides an accelerated route to the equivalent of an honours degree in economics. All key areas of economics are covered, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and a range of applied courses such as labour economics, international trade, economics of sport and finance.

A performance of 60% or better in the HDip Economic Science guarantees a place on our MSc Economics programme, MHH52.

An honours (Level 8) primary degree in any discipline, or equivalent. Students from disciplines as varied as philosophy, business, history and computer science have been accepted and excelled in this programme.

Students without any knowledge of economics are expected either to have a good background in statistics and quantitative methods or to be prepared to undertake substantial independent study to equip themselves with the expected level of numeracy. The Admissions Director will be happy to recommend a suitable programme of reading and study to successful applicants.

Minimum English language requirements:
Applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English in order to benefit fully from their course of study. For information about English language tests accepted and required scores, please see here. The requirements specified are applicable for both EU and International applicants.

Maynooth University's TOEFL code is 8850.

The programme covers microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and a range of optional modules such as labour economics, international trade, economics of sport and finance.

Students take four compulsory modules, including a research-based thesis, and eight optional modules chosen to suit the background and career goals of the individual student. Students discuss which modules would be best for them with the Programme Director at the start of the academic year, and are helped to devise the optimal programme of study for themselves. Students who wish to take a module from another department may do so subject to the permission of that department. (Not all combinations of modules may be available due to timetable considerations.)

Graduates of the HDip in Economic Science hold the equivalent of an honours degree in economics, and so have all the career opportunities of economics graduates. Successful students emerge with a deep knowledge of their subject and a variety of skills which will give them a competitive edge in an ever-more competitive job market. Graduates are equipped for a wide variety of careers, such as accountancy, banking, financial services, teaching and economic consultancy, to name but a few.
