Maynooth is a great place to study. The relaxed yet professional atmosphere really helps you focus during exam periods, especially in the South Campus, where the Mathematics Department is located.

The lecturers are extremely helpful and focus on ensuring you understand the material rather than just passing exams. The modules are diverse and interesting, changing regularly. I even did a module through Irish despite hardly speaking a word of it!

The structure of the mathematics degree allowed me to explore different subject options. For example, I initially studied business modules in first year, but after realising they weren’t for me, I switched to statistics, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I made.

Studying mathematics at Maynooth helps you develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills that are applicable across many industries, making it a great foundation for any career.

I secured my first actuarial role with EY before finishing my final year at Maynooth and started working in their Non-Life actuarial department. My time there exposed me to a wide range of actuarial work, from Solvency II audits to advisory projects like pricing, reserving, and financial modelling.

From there, I moved to AXA Insurance, where I gained hands-on experience in capital modelling and reserving. I then joined Forvis Mazars, where I worked on a variety of actuarial consulting engagements before transitioning into my current role at Beazley.

At Beazley, I am part of a growing, specialist insurer, applying risk management techniques to support the business. My role allows me to combine actuarial and risk management expertise to help the company navigate evolving regulatory and financial challenges.

The job market can be tough, and getting your foot in the door isn’t always easy. What makes the difference is passion. Whatever career path you want to follow, show genuine enthusiasm for it. That passion is what will set you apart in interviews and help you build a career that is both rewarding and fulfilling.
