Barbara McCormack, Special Collections & Archives, has contributed to the recently published Treasures of Irish Christianity Volume III. The piece relates to a 1914 letter from the Archives of St Patrick’s College, Maynooth which was written by an Irish Missionary in Pretoria, hoping to build a chapel for the Pretoria Leper Asylum. The letter, written by Fr Thomas Ryan O.M.I., Parish Priest of Pretoria, and addressed to College President Monsignor John F Hogan, outlined the plight of over 800 people detained in the Pretoria Leper Asylum, an institution for the segregation and treatment of leprosy sufferers in South Africa.
