Charles O’Sullivan, a PhD candidate in social welfare and immigration law at Maynooth University Department of Law, was recently published in the peer-reviewed Irish Journal of European Law.

Charles’ article, which is informed by elements of his ongoing doctoral research, explores several of the most recent judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on access to social assistance for EU citizens. Access to this category of welfare payments for EU citizens resident in a secondary Member State is predicated on either their current economic activity or the retention of their status as a worker. Charles argues that these judgments merely restate this principle, albeit in quite stark terms, and in doing so demonstrate the market-driven nature of welfare coordination at a Union level.

Funded by the Irish Research Council and supervised by Dr. Cliodhna Murphy, Charles’ doctoral thesis explores the right to social welfare payments for different categories of migrants resident in Ireland under both Irish and EU law.
