Each year, the Geographical Society of Ireland honours the best dissertation in Geography. The assessment is made by a panel of Irish and international scholars. This year, all three finalists were from our own Maynooth Geography Department. David Smyth, currently at St. Patrick's College DCU, was shortlisted for his dissertation, Climate Change and its Potential Impacts on Construction in Ireland: The Argument for Mitigation and Adaptation, supervised by John Sweeney. Elaine Burroughs, who has positions at Maynooth University and at University College Dublin, was shortlisted for her study of Irish Institutional Discourses of Illegal Immigration: A Critical Discourse Analysis Approach, supervised by Mary Gilmartin and Mary Corcoran. The winner was Eoin O'Mahony, now at St. Patrick's College DCU for his dissertation, New Geographies of the Secular and the Sacred in Contemporary Ireland, supervised by Mark Boyle and Ronan Foley. These are marvelous achievements and further reasons for pride in our doctoral programme. Congratulations to Eoin, to David and to Elaine; and to their supervisors.
