How can the meeting of art and geography lead to critical practices of creating and realising alternative imaginaries in these urgent times? Socially-ecologically engaged artist Seoidín O'Sullivan discusses her recent collaborative projects in Dublin, Hard/Graft, a series of community urban orchards, as part of her Citizen/Artist residency with Common Ground (2017-19), and Mapping Green Dublin (2020), a year-long mapping project with UCD Geography funded by the EPA. She will also speak to ways that the Mapping Green Dublin Project approached community mapping during Covid times, with travel and social distancing restrictions. The talk will consider how participatory art methodologies can create multi-disciplinary and -practice communities with a range of expertise that may result in forging ecological commons and more healthy multi-species futures.
Seoidín O’Sullivan is a contemporary artist and art lecturer in the Department of Visual Culture at the National College of Art Design. Her art projects are collaborative and focus on bringing people together in action to protect or develop an aspect of their ecological commons. Seoidín works in the area of 'Critical Ecologies' connecting multidisciplinary teams and partnerships, and using creative participatory art methodologies to reveal, find solutions and work towards creating multi-species futures and alternative collective imaginaries at a time of climate crisis. Past projects include The Tree Line Project, 2017 and Revolving School, 2016 Irish Museum of Modern Art . Recent publications include "Conversation on a Commons", HARD/GRAFT (2020) with Common Ground, documenting a two year art project and mentorship with Vagabond Reviews.
