The International Human Rights Framework on Legal Capacity and the new Irish Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Legislation

On 10 March 2016, Dr Chales O’Mahony (NUI Galway) will give a guest lecture entitled ‘The International Human Rights Framework on Legal Capacity and the new Irish Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Legislation’ within the Department of Law’s International and European Disability Law course.

The guest lecture will be held on Thursday, 10 March 2016 from 4.00pm – 6.00pm in Tutorial Room 8 of the John Hume Building, which is located on the North Campus of Maynooth University.
 
Dr Charles O’Mahony is a lecturer in the School of Law at NUI Galway and a leading expert on legal capacity. He completed his Ph.D. at the Centre for Disability Law and Policy, NUI Galway in 2013; his thesis was entitled ‘Diversion: A Comparative Study of Law and Policy Relating to Defendants and Offenders with Mental Health Problems and Intellectual Disability’.  Dr O’Mahony previously worked as a Legal Officer for Amnesty International Ireland’s mental health campaign; he campaigned on the reform of the Mental Health Act 2001 and on the need to introduce legislation to repeal and replace the wards of court system.  He also worked as a legal researcher for the Law Reform Commission of Ireland for a number of years, working on different law reform projects. 
 
This guest lecture will take place within the scope of the Department of Law’s International and European Disability Law course, which is taught by Dr Delia Ferri.
