PhD Candidate to Present Paper at Duke University

Monday, February 22, 2016 - 11:30

On 4 March 2016, Bruno O. Igwe, a PhD candidate at Maynooth University Department of Law, will present a paper titled: ‘The Influence of Customs and Traditions on the Migration Patterns of the Igbo Ethnic Group’  at the Graduate Conference hosted by the History Department of Duke University, Durham, North Carolina.

The paper appraises the extent to which the custom and tradition of the Igbo ethnic group, as expressed in idioms and proverbs, influence their migration paradigm. It examines how the Igbo inclination to migrate, their ability to assimilate and contribute to the development of their host community as well as to maintain a link with their homeland is encapsulated in Igbo idioms and proverbs. The paper explores the contentious issue of the origin of the Igbo people, their national and international migration patterns, and the effects of the Nigeria/Biafra civil war on their national migration consciousness.
