Professor David Opar is offering a Talk on Risk Factors for Hamstring Strain in Maynooth University on Thursday 7th March 2024 at 2pm in TSI Lecture Theatre 3

This talk is open to all staff, students and any other interested colleagues/members of the public. This is a free event with no need to register to attend.

Professor David Opar is the Director of the Sports Performance, Recovery, Injury and New Technologies (SPRINT) Research Centre at the Australian Catholic University, based in Melbourne Australia. With over a decade's experience in the field of exercise, sport and human movement sciences, Prof Opar's is a world-leading researcher who focuses on hamstring strain injuries, specifically how best to identify individuals at risk of this injury and how rehabilitation practices can be improved. Beyond research, Prof Opar and his team provide consultancy services to professional sporting teams both in Australia and internationally. Prof Opar's most notable career achievements include co-invention of the NordBord which resulted in the formation of Vald Performance, and as a member of the NFL’s Lower Extremity Soft Tissue Injury Task Force.
 
Prof Opar will present on his work related to risk factors for hamstring strain injuries and summarise the research on exercise-based interventions aimed at improving these risk factors. He will then provide an overview of the HAMtring InjuRy (HAMIR) Index study, a 4-year multi-site prospective cohort study which received US$4m of funding from the National Football League. HAMIR aims to develop multi-factorial predictive models for hamstring strain injury and re-injury in American Football.
