A Maynooth University – COVID-19 Remote Working Employee Pulse Survey was launched on 3rd July 2020 with a deadline for responses by 10th July 2020.
The objective of the survey was to gather data on Maynooth University (MU) employees’ experiences of remote working during the Covid-19 restrictions to answer the following questions:
- What challenges and opportunities do colleagues face with regards to remote working?
- What supports might the University provide in the short-term to address these - challenges?
- How do colleagues perceive a return to campus for work and how can the University support this?
Additionally, it included a census, on behalf of IT Services, on the devices used to work from home. This was an anonymous, voluntary survey and completion of the questions was not mandatory. The results of the survey were received by the Office of the Vice-President for Equality and Diversity and data was aggregated to prepare preliminary reports for wider analysis.

MU COVID-19 Report
The MU Athena SWAN Action Plan 2018-2022 included Action 9.5: “Complete a full review of on-campus childcare requirements and facilities in order to formulate an evidence-based strategy in line with trajectories for growth in staff and student numbers. This will include conducting a dedicated survey of staff and students with children to establish future needs and to implement a plan.”
These reports give an overview of the results of the MU Childcare Review 2019 and relevant Childcare and Caring results from subsequent surveys (COVID-19 Remote Working Employee Pulse Survey 2020, the Equality & Diversity Staff Census 2020/21, the Equality & Diversity Staff Survey 2022).
Next Steps:
Staff and students raised 'dissatisfaction with breastfeeding facilities' across a number of the surveys and highlighted that 'supports for staff returning to the workplace' could also be improved. These will be considered as part of the Athena Swan Renewal process, as well as further initiatives to help improve culture and the perception of taking leave on career opportunities.
Staff and students also highlighted a number of additional services that they would like the University Creche to provide, including:
- a breakfast club for children before school/preschool.
- a holiday club/summer club for children/teenagers.
- a parent and toddler group (for under 3s with parents/carers).
- a drop-in or flexible service
These are currently outside the remit of the Maynooth University Creche and along with issues of availability and affordability it is proposed that a more comprehensive analysis/review of possible future options for the University Creche, taking into consideration the childcare and regulatory environment in which it operates, will be conducted as a separate item.
