Tuesday, September 10, 2024 - 16:15

On occasion of the 54th Annual Conference of the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES), researchers of the European Research Council (ERC) funded project ‘Protecting the Right to Culture of Persons with Disabilities and Enhancing Cultural Diversity through European Union Law: Exploring New Paths – DANCING’ travelled to Trento, Italy to present recent and on-going research of the project.

The conference was hosted by the University of Trento in Italy between September 1 and 4 with an array of parallel panel sessions, a series of plenary sessions and featuring the Journal of Common Market Studies’ Annual Review Lecture.

The ERC DANCING team presented in a panel chaired by Professor Delia Ferri entitled ‘Advancing Disability Rights in the European Union: Socio-legal Perspectives, Federal Trends and Participatory Approaches’. On the basis of a chapter prepared for the forthcoming co-edited volume by Prof. Ferri and Eva Krolla entitled ‘Roles and Actors in EU Disability Law’ developed under the ERC DANCING project remit, Eva presented on the ‘The Role of the European Commission in Shaping EU Disability Law’. Iryna Tekuchova presented parts of her on-going PhD research and specifically on ‘The Global Reach of EU Disability Law: A Ukrainian Lens’. Under the heading ‘Leveraging on EU Law to Realise the Right to Participation in Cultural Life of Persons with Disabilities’ Léa Urzel Francil presented findings of socio-legal research conducted under work package 1 of the ERC DANCING project and on the basis of a prepared article on the subject. Stimulating questions and feedback on the presentations and on-going research benefitted the team members and overall project in advancing their research and communicating to a broader audience of European Studies scholars.

Professor Delia Ferri is Professor of Law at the School of Law and Criminology at Maynooth University and Co-Director of the Assisting Living and Learning (ALL) Institute at Maynooth University and is the Principal Investigator of the ERC DANCING project.
