Yesterday, the national final of the 3 Minute Thesis competition took place at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin, where eight talented PhD students from universities across Ireland showcased their research in front of a full audience. With anticipation high in the room, and numerous supporters joining online, the stage was set for an inspiring event.

Each finalist presented their research with confidence and clarity, with a single, carefully designed slide to communicate their findings in just three minutes. The judges, impressed by the quality of all the presentations, had the difficult task of selecting a winner.

National Final Winners
The winner of this year’s national 3 Minute Thesis competition was Aideen McCabe from University College Cork, whose presentation captivated the judges. Muhammad Muddasar from the University of Limerick was awarded runner-up, while Megan Joyce from TU Dublin took home the Audience Choice Award.

The judges commended the finalists, expressing their confidence that the future of research in Ireland is in excellent hands.

A special congratulations goes to Wieteke Windrich of Maynooth University for her intriguing presentation on the Cross-Linguistic Influence of Dutch: Second Language Induced Changes of Dutch Posture Verbs. Wieteke’s research delves into the emotional and societal effects of language attrition on native speakers as they migrate, adding valuable insights into the impact of cultural and linguistic change.

This event showcased the rich variety of research being conducted by Ireland’s PhD students, sparking interest and conversation around critical topics in academia. We are already looking forward to next year’s competition when Oluwayomi Akinfenwa from the Hamilton Institute will represent Maynooth University in the national finals.

Congratulations to all the finalists on their remarkable achievements!
