
Maynooth University Law and Criminology PhD graduate Dr Mariza Avgeri has been awarded the Walter Benjamin postdoctoral position by the German Research Foundation. This prestigious 2 year position will be carried out at the University of Göttingen in Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sabine Hess.
Dr Avgeri’s postdoctoral research project is entitled ‘Epistemic injustice in the refugee status determination of disabled asylum claims: a critical sociolegal analysis of Germany, Greece and the UK’.
Dr Avgeri previously was the joint winner of the prestigious European Law Faculties Association (ELFA) Award for the Best Doctoral Thesis on European Law for 2023 for a thesis completed at Maynooth University entitled ‘A transgender studies approach to gender identity and expression-based asylum claims based on a critical doctrinal and discourse analysis of CJEU and ECtHR Jurisprudence’.
