David Mangan speaks on the Platform to Business Directive

Tuesday, August 27, 2024 - 08:45

Dr David Mangan spoke at the European Trade Union Confederation’s Future of Work conference in Brussels on research that is being conducted with Karol Muszyński, and Valeria Pulignano. The presentation outlined how the EU’s new Platform Work Directive (PWD) and the Platform to Business Regulation (P2B) interact. These two instruments impact the working conditions protection for both employees and solo self-employed in the context of the assumed co-existence of these two groups on the same labour platforms. In particular, the P2B Regulation provides, amongst others points, rules pertaining to the restriction, suspension, and termination of contractual relationships between the platforms and business users, transparency requirements pertaining to terms and conditions of service, as well as obligations of platforms to provide explanation of the functioning of the ranking system that would in turn shape the position of not only business users. It remains to be further specified how the PWD and P2B Regulation (in addition to other instruments such as the new AI Act and the General Data Protection Act) would overlap. A video of the presentation is available on the ETUI’s YouTube page (starting around 1 hour 29 minutes). You may also see Professor Michael Doherty in the audience. The slides are also available.
