On 22 July, the Co-Directors of the Research Centre in International Justice, Dr Amina Adanan and Dr Rhiannon Bandiera, made a written submission to the Australian Parliament’s Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee inquiry into the Criminal Code Amendment (Genocide, Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes) Bill 2024. This submission was in response to the proposed amendments by Senator Lidia Thorpe to the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth). The Bill proposes to remove the attorney-general consent to domestic prosecutions for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity (commonly referred to as the Attorney-General’s fiat).

Dr Amina Adanan is Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Law and Dr Rhiannon Bandiera is Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Criminology in the School of Law and Criminology at Maynooth University, where they teach on the LL.M and MA programmes.
