On 22 August, Dr Amina Adanan presented at an event organised by the Irish Penal Reform Trust, entitled Know Your Rights: Information, Advocacy and Remedies. This event brought together a wide variety of service providers, information and advice givers, people with lived experience of the prison system and relevant organisations from across the academic, civil society and statutory sectors. The event was funded by the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.
For this event, Amina presented on the barriers and issues that arise for foreign national and minority ethnic people in prison in accessing their rights. This presentation was based on findings from the report entitled, “Sometimes I'm missing the words”: The rights, needs and experiences of foreign national and minority ethnic groups in the Irish penal system, co-authored by Dr. David M. Doyle and consisted of Dr. Avril Brandon, Dr. Joe Garrihy, Dr. Amina Adanan and Prof. Denis Bracken and published by the IPRT.

Dr Amina Adanan is Lecturer/ Assistant Professor in Law in Maynooth University’s School of Law and Criminology. Amina’s research areas include how international law applies in domestic legal systems, and human rights in Ireland, and she researches and teaches in these areas. Amina is the author of the forthcoming IPRT report on public interest prison law in Ireland (which will be launched on 26 September 2024).
