On Thursday, 5 December, the team of the European Research Council (ERC) funded project ‘Protecting the Right to Culture of Persons with Disabilities and Enhancing Cultural Diversity through European Union Law: Exploring New Paths – DANCING’ was delighted to welcome Professor Sacha Garben for the sixth edition of the DANCING Academic Conversation series.
The event was opened by Principal Investigator of the ERC DANCING project and convenor of the event, Professor Delia Ferri, introducing Professor Garben and her outstanding career achievements, including her roles in the European Commission, at the College of Europe and at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal. Dr Karen Lynch Shally, in her capacity of co-director of the Research Centre for European Law, which kindly supported this DANCING Academic Conversation, also welcomed attendees and the guest speaker.
Professor Garben then gave an inspired and detailed talk entitled “Confronting the Competence Conundrum: Reflections on the Ultra Vires Challenge to the Minimum Wage Directive and its Meaning for the EU (Social) ‘Constitution’”. This deep analysis of EU law gave rise to a thought-provoking conversation with the attendees, touching upon several concepts including the future of the EU in terms of integration, social policies and overarching objectives. Particular emphasis was also given to the role that the Directive plays before the Court of Justice of the European Union and its links with the underlying principles of EU law.
This edition of the DANCING Academic Conversation series took place in blended format and the DANCING team was delighted to welcome many attendees both from Ireland and around Europe.
Professor Delia Ferri is Professor of Law at the School of Law and Criminology at Maynooth University and Co-Director of the Assisting Living and Learning (ALL) Institute at Maynooth University.
