On the 27th of March, the School of Law and Criminology and the ALL Institute launched a new Horizon Europe project titled SWINS- Sustainable Well-being through Investment in Social Services.
Coordinated by Università di Firenze - PIN ARCO, the project involves Maynooth University as part of its consortium and sees Professor Delia Ferri and Dr Charles O'Sullivan as members of the Maynooth research team. The aim of the project is to create a new framework for measuring the return of social services investment from both an economic and social point of view.
Welcome remarks were provided by Professor Fergus Ryan, Head of the School of Law & Criminology, and Professor Deirdre Desmond, Co-Director of the ALL Institute. Then Dr Federico Ciani, Coordinator of Inclusive Development Research at ARCO, presented the key tenets and objectives of SWINS, followed by a speech from Dr. O’Sullivan and Prof. Ferri highlighting the potential role of EU law and policy in supporting investment in social services. The event proceeded with an insightful presentation by Vincent Power, SC and Adjunct Professor at the School of Law and Criminology, Maynooth University and a presentation by Professor Bernardo Cortese, full professor of EU Law at the University of Padova. Then, introduced by Doctor Karen Lynch Shally, Professor Juan Jorge Piernas López (University of Murcia) and Professor Leigh Hancher (European University Institute) provided two thought-provoking talks. Dr. Christopher McMahon, reflected on all of the previous presentations and provided insights upon which the SWINS team will reflect in the future.

We wish Prof. Ferri, Dr. O’Sullivan and the rest of the team all the very best for this new, exciting adventure.
