Prof Doherty presents at IPASS Annual Conference 2024

Thursday, June 27, 2024 - 09:30

Prof Michael Doherty recently gave a presentation at the IPASS (Irish Payroll Association) Annual Conference. Prof Doherty’s presentation, “Domino Dancing: Determining Employment Status in Ireland” gave an overview and analysis of the recent decision of the Irish Supreme Court in the “Domino’s case” (The Revenue Commissioners v. Karshan (Midlands) Ltd). The decision has been described as the first ‘gig economy’ case decided by the Irish Supreme Court. Although the case did not involve the use of a platform to organise work, it did require the Supreme Court to rule on the question of the employment status of pizza delivery drivers, all of whom were labelled as ‘independent contractors’ in the contracts between the company and the drivers. The paper will shortly be published in an academic journal.

The conference was held at a sold-out Croke Park Conference centre on May 24th 2004.
