As part of the European Research Council (ERC) funded project ‘Protecting the Right to Culture of Persons with Disabilities and Enhancing Cultural Diversity through European Union Law: Exploring New Paths – DANCING’, Professor Delia Ferri and Dr. Ann Leahy publish a book that brings together the main findings of Work Package 1.
The book - titled ‘Dismantling Barriers and Advancing the Right of Persons with Disabilities to Participate in Cultural Life. A Socio-Legal Analysis’ and published by Routledge - focuses on the right of persons with disabilities to participate in cultural life. It discusses the normative content of Article 30 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and its implementation. On foot of a pan-European empirical study and a socio-legal analysis, the book identifies and categorises barriers to cultural participation, highlighting new paths to operationalise Article 30 CRPD.

The ambition of the book is that of understanding, bringing together, and integrating diverse disciplinary perspectives on cultural participation of persons with disabilities. In particular, the book aims to blend a thorough legal analysis of the obligations stemming from Article 30 CRPD with insights from the fields of disability studies, cultural studies and sociology and with empirical research. In this regard, the book also endeavours to re-read the right to participate in cultural life through the lens of lived experiences of persons with disabilities.
The book is available Open Access here.

Professor Delia Ferri is Professor of Law at the School of Law and Criminology at Maynooth University and Co-Director of the Assisting Living and Learning (ALL) Institute at Maynooth University.
