Professor Tobias Lock was awarded a Jean Monnet Chair in EU law and Fundamental Rights through the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme. The award followed a competitive process and Professor Lock’s was the only Jean Monnet Chair awarded to an Irish university in 2020. The Jean Monnet Chair will provide the Department with ca. €40,000 in funding for the teaching of EU law and for related activities over a three year period. It will allow the Department to offer our students attractive modules on EU law, a study trip to the EU institutions and to bring renowned visiting lecturers to the university. Additionally, the funding will enable us to offer annual workshops on EU fundamental rights law to practising lawyers as well as the production of open-access learning resources. At the end of the three year funding period, Professor Lock aims to have published a monograph on EU fundamental rights law with a leading publisher.
