Dr. Aoibhinnn Ní Shúilleabháin (UCD) and Dr. Thomas Delahunty published an article arguing for the introduction of financial bursaries to increase the attractiveness of teaching as a profession, recruit excellent candidates to the profession and help in alleviating some of the systemic pressures in Irish Education being caused by the current national shortages of teachers. In the article, the recent RAISE (www.raise-stem.ie) bursary, which was won by Leanne O’ Connor (4th year BSc. Ed student in the Department of Education), was highlighted as an example of the impact such initiatives could have within the Irish system. The article argues that “If Ireland is to maintain the integrity of its internationally renowned education system, steps must be taken to increase the attractiveness of the teaching profession here” and can be read in full here.
