Maynooth Students' 29th Annual Galway Cycle

Seán Kelly and friends launched the Galway Cycle 2016 in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland
Friday, April 8, 2016 - 09:30

On Friday, 8 April 200 cyclists descend into the heart of Galway after an epic 200km journey from Maynooth University.

All 210 cyclists and support crew will arrive into Eyre Square at approximately 5.30pm. The hardy bunch kicked off their journey from Maynooth University at 6.30am this morning. The ‘Galway Cycle’ is organised by Maynooth Students for Charity. The Galway Cycle is now into its 29th year and to date has raised more than €1,000,000 for various Irish charities. It currently holds the title of Best University Event in all of Ireland.

Down Syndrome Ireland and Maynooth Students for Charity are urging Kildare residents to come out and support the cause, give a good send-off and to welcome the cyclists back on Sunday evening. All the cyclists and support crew will also be in Galway on Saturday raising money for the charity. All the money raised from the Galway Cycle will help fund Down Syndrome Ireland’s Education Programme which works with schools and families to ensure children with Down syndrome can access education and get the support they need.

The Cycle will also help fund a new multi-purpose family area for people with Down syndrome and  their families. The family area will incorporate sensory equipment, a play area, specialist resources and a social space where DSI members can meet, socialise and engage with our services.

Pat Clarke, CEO of Down Syndrome Ireland, said: “We’re so grateful to Maynooth Students for Charity for supporting Down Syndrome Ireland and the work we do around the country.“All the money raised will help extend our Education Programme for children with Down Syndrome and will also help us develop a much needed multi-purpose family area for people with Down Syndrome and their families.

“We’re urging the people of Galway to come out and support the cyclists along the route and to support Down Syndrome Ireland in any way they can throughout the weekend.”
